What happens when you switch to natural cosmetics?

Researchers at the University of Berkeley, California asked 100 teenage girls to replace their conventional cosmetics with 100% natural products. The results of the experiment were astonishing.

An average American woman uses about a dozen different cosmetic products every day which contain a combined average of 168 different chemicals. About 25% of women expose their body to even more chemicals. Some teenage girls use up to 17 different skin cleansing and other skin care products every single day. That’s what makes it all the more important to let them know about the risks they are running.

Back to the Berkeley research, the lab results of the volunteers showed a tremendous change after only 3 days of chemical-free skin care.

Examining the urine samples, researchers were looking at the levels of four chemical groups in particular: phthalates, parabens, triclosan and benzophenone-3. Some of these are toxic, some tend to build up in the body and some of them are so-called endocrine disruptors – i.e. they can impact on one’s hormone system.

The more often you expose yourself to these chemicals (commonly used by the beauty industry) and the higher the dosage, the higher the risk.

That’s why the results of the Berkeley research are so important. They are direct evidence that the chemicals you put on your skin will eventually be absorbed and get into your body. Barely 3 days after they had switched to chemical-free skin care and beauty products the subjects of the research saw the level of chemicals in their urine decrease by 27-45%.

The test was part of an awareness campaign aimed to reduce the amount of potentially harmful chemicals ingested by teenage girls through everyday cosmetics. The test subjects themselves were convinced by the results. How about you?
