Bergamot was born from the crossing of bitter orange and lemon. The essential oil is pressed from the peel of the fruit. The same essential oil gives Earl Grey its minty, citrusy aroma.

Bergamot essential oil
Bergamot oil is pressed from the fresh peel of the fruit. The fruit is midway between bitter orange and lemon as it emerged from the crossing of the two. One hundred kilogrammes of bergamot yields half a kilogramme of oil. Bergamot essential oil may feel familiar: it also gives Earl Grey its fresh citrus aroma.
It has a citrusy, sweet and fruity scent with spicy notes.
It mixes well with cypress, muscat sage, ylang ylang, sweet orange and tangerine essential oils.
Warning: Bergamot oil contains bergapten which can lead to increased sun sensitivity. Avoid sunbathing or tanning within 12 hours of using Bergamot essential oil. It can cause allergic reactions in those who are intolerant to it.
How to use
-
- Mix it with shea butter or natural oils to soothe dry skin and treat skin conditions
- Vaporised (e.g. in aroma lamp), it will put you in a great mood
- Use in sauna
- Add a few drops to the bathwater (mix it with milk beforehand) – it will make a refreshing bath
- Use as a fragrant element in any massage oil
- You can add a few drops to scent-free Manna butters too – it will only do good. In this case it’s important to melt the butter in hot water first to help it blend with the essential oil.
Manna tip:
Make an immune booster bath using 2 drops of Bergamot essential oil and 2 drops of Tea tree essential oil. Mix the oils with a little milk or honey. Then add it to the bathwater. You can make a chest cream using the same method: drip the essential oils into shea butter or coconut oil (you can choose other butters or cold-pressed oils) and massage the mix into the skin of the chest or the back.
