5 tips for a skin-friendly shower

You might think that the way you shower doesn’t really matter: get under the water, soap, rinse, done! But if you have sensitive skin you might have realised that the method and the frequency of showers (let alone the cosmetics used for your daily washing) are far from irrelevant.

Many people commit the mistake of drying their skin too much – which is usually followed up with a mad spree of experimenting with a whole range of different products to tackle itchiness and dry skin.

How to avoid that pitfall? Here are my tips.

1. Better off with lukewarm water
Although a hot-water shower can feel quite good in cold winter months, believe me, it won’t do your skin any favours. That’s because hot water washes off the natural oily layer that protects your skin – leaving it more vulnerable to de-hydration, itchiness and external impacts.

2. Don’t linger for too long
Spending a long time (i.e. more than 4-5 mins) under the shower is not helping either your skin or Earth.

3. One per day will do
Taking showers more often than that can easily harm your skin’s natural protection layer.

4. Make the most of steam
Warm steam will open up your pores. So if you have time, put on a quick face mask and give your skin a good scrub with a Luffa sponge. You can also use your time under the shower to remove any callus from your sole. A steam-filled bathroom also becomes the best place to do shaving or hair removal. Do it with coconut oil if you want to replace chemical-based foams and gels.

5.Massage oils and butters into wet skin
Don’t scrub your skin or dab it completely dry after a shower – instead, give it some time to absorb the water drops left on its surface.
