What’s behind your eczema and hay-fever?

If you suffer from allergy, hay-fever or recurring eczema you must be wondering what it’s down to. How come one child will get eczema while their brothers and sisters won’t be irritated by chemicals? If you’re familiar with our story you’ll know that it all started with the battle on eczema: after my son’s birth we had to ditch all chemicals we had in our household.

Many people will only experience the insufferable itching, inflammation and other body reactions only when they get older or become adults – which often leaves them wondering what they have done wrong.

Scientists have long been researching the roots of eczema, hay-fever and allergy. One of the main suspects is the premature or excessive use of antibiotics.

Researchers at the University of Utrecht have recently found evidence that people who had been treated with antibiotics more than once during their early years (under the age of 2) were much more likely to get eczema or hay-fever.

You may already know from personal experience that antibiotics can disrupt the natural balance of your gut flora. You may also have heard (or read on my blog LINK) that the health of the gut flora is directly linked to eczema and acne (or the lack of them).

The latest studies highlight that upsetting the gut flora of a baby or a small child with antibiotics is risky and should only be considered if absolutely necessary. It can easily become the source of lifelong health problems.
