How to protect your hair from the Sun?

How do you protect your hair from the Sun? It would be fairly difficult to always wear a hat, cap or a fancy shawl all summer long and walking around with a parasol can be uncomfortable.

So how can you still protect your hair from harmful sunrays, the salt and chemicals of swimming pool water, the heat and dry air? In today's post, I have 3+1 tips for you about all the things you can do to protect your strands and hair-style:

  • Protect your hair from the Sun! Although you can't apply sunscreen on your hair, you should be as careful as possible, especially if you have light coloured or thin-stranded hair to avoid sunstroke and possible sunburn on your scalp. If it's already too late, there's not much else you can do than mitigate the damage and give extra care to your scalp in the next few days. (You can read more tips on this here.)

  • If your hair gets greasy fast, you'll have a harder time in the summer: due to the heat, the Sun and the sea or swimming pool water, your scalp can shift gears and you might feel like washing your hair twice a day still isn't good enough. Unfortunately, that isn't the best solution for your scalp or your hair, yet you still have options to choose from – I compiled these tips in a previous post.

  • If you have dry, easily frayed hair, you should keep a hair pack on you when on vacation or if you go swimming regularly. You can even use it before washing your hair so you could thorough remove the residue of nourishing oil or hair balm. This is a tip which can be especially handy if you have spots on your décolleté or the upper stretches of your back. For plain hair packs, I particularly recommend our Manna extra virgin coconut oil and Manna Argan oil, yet you can also use some sweet almond oil to take care of your tips from time to time.

  • Don't torture your strands! Let your hair air dry! Don't tie it up or braid it, since your hair is even more vulnerable when wet. That's why I don't recommend going to the beach in the summer with braided hair or buns. If your hair is particularly delicate, you can try running a little oil through your hair before swimming to protect it from dehydration.
