How old do you look?

Do you look younger or older than your age? Inherited characteristics matter less than you would imagine. Scientists at Duke University have mapped the most important elements of aging by examining more than a thousand men and women (aged 26-38) for several years.

The findings didn’t cause a shock of surprise. However, they provide the first tangible, scientifically proven evidence on what speeds up or slows down aging.

In the research, people who looked younger than their age were healthier than their peers.

More than 20 different tests were carried out to establish the subjects’ state of health: blood pressure, bodyweight, cholesterol levels, the functioning of intestines – researchers even recorded inflammations that may have occurred in subjects when they were 26, 32 and 38. Diet and lifestyle were also carefully observed.

The research findings seem to underpin the hitherto common wisdom, i.e. that only 20% of the factors leading to premature aging
(body and skin) can be blamed on our genes. The rest of it is up to us – our lifestyle, our environment and our life events.
